The latest Nollywood movie about Funmilayo Ransome Kuti is simply titled “Funmilayo Ransome Kuti” (2022). It’s a biopic chronicling the life of the Nigerian activist and mother of Afrobeat legend Fela Kuti. The movie sheds light on her accomplishments beyond being Fela’s mother, particularly her role in leading the Abeokuta Women’s Union in a fight against colonialism and gender marginalization.
The movie was critically acclaimed and achieved commercial success, becoming the number one film in Nigeria and West Africa for three consecutive weekends in May 2024. It also recently started streaming on Amazon Prime Video.
